Conservation Treatments

As an academically trained conservator, Rhonda Wozniak focuses on preserving the integrity of objects by designing conservation treatments that will stabilize the art or artifact with minimal intervention.

Prior to treatment, each object is carefully examined and its condition assessed. Conservation methods and materials are selected to be appropriate for each specific object. Photographic and written documentation accompany each treatment.

Types of objects and materials treated include: fine art; decorative art; contemporary art; outdoor sculpture; archaeological objects; ethnographic materials; historical artifacts; religious collections; folk art; and family treasures in metal, wood, ceramic, glass, stone, and more.

Outdoor Sculpture
Maintenance

Maintaining outdoor sculpture can help to ensure its longevity. Exposure to extremes of weather and public contact typically mean that degradation and damage may occur more quickly than for most other art. Preservation plans for outdoor sculptures should always include a schedule of regular maintenance, including inspections and documentation of condition, periodic cleaning, and minor conservation. These preventative measures can keep a sculpture looking its best between major treatment campaigns, and inspections can catch small problems before they become more major issues.

RWOC conservators care for landmark sculptures in and around Pittsburgh. We can train your staff to execute the maintenance, or we will be happy to aid you in these efforts. As with all art, preventive care is the best defense.

Courier
Services

To minimize damage that may occur to art in transit, RWOC offers courier services for institutions and private individuals.

Our conservators will accompany your shipments or hand-carry fragile artwork, as permitted under airline regulations, nationally or internationally.  We will supervise safe loading and unloading of the artifact from point to point, helping to ensure its safe passage and arrival.

RWOC has couriered art while acting as Objects Conservator at the Carnegie Museum of Art for traveling exhibits such as Aluminum by Design: from Jewelry to Jets (national and international venues); Fierce Friends, Artists and Animals, 1750-1900 (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam). We have also couriered art for the Andy Warhol Museum to the Fondazione Prada Museum in Venice.

Collection Surveys
Collection surveys and risk assessments are the first steps in taking a professional approach to the preservation of your collection. Professional object surveys determine the condition of your art, describe and analyze current storage and display methods and materials, and make specific recommendations for upgrades and maintenance.

Whether you are an institution or a private collector wishing to preserve your treasures, a survey of the condition of your objects and assessment of the risks that might pose a danger can provide a comprehensive overview of your holdings. This information is critical for targeting funding to support your preservation efforts.

Our conservators are available for collection surveys and risk assessment documentation. We will compile the necessary data to assess your collections' needs and evaluate the state of your storage and display areas in an easily comprehensible format.

 Preservation

Preservation is a pro active approach to preventive conservation. There are many precautions that institutions can implement to ensure the safety of their collections, and special measures you can take as an individual to preserve your personal family treasures.

Our conservators will take the time to discuss the preservation needs of your collection and tailor a plan for the long-term care of your objects.

We offer consultations for all aspects of collections care including recommendations for display, handling, storage, shipping, and museum quality mounts.
 Educational Lectures
Educating yourself, your staff, and the general public is paramount to protecting the art and artifacts in your care. Education can help you and your staff to make more informed choices regarding preservation.

We offer a number of informative lectures and demonstrations for interested groups or institutions. Our conservators are also available for your community outreach efforts.

We have lectured on conservation topics at Pennsylvania State University; University of Pittsburgh; Carnegie Mellon University; Chatam College; State University of New York; Carnegie Museum of Art; Maridon Museum; and Laughlin Memorial Free Library.
